In a bid to enhance safety, environmental health, and regulatory compliance, the Lagos State Government has issued a directive restricting construction activities across the state to the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, via a statement released by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi.
Dr. Olumide emphasized that the move is aimed at reducing building collapse incidents, minimizing environmental disruptions, and promoting the well-being of Lagos residents.
“This restriction must be strictly adhered to by all stakeholders in the construction sector. It is in the public interest and will be enforced by relevant government agencies,” he stated.

Acknowledging the complexities of building projects, Olumide noted that exceptions may be granted for construction activities outside the stipulated hours—but only after formal applications are submitted and evaluated.
“Concessions may be granted, but only after due diligence and evaluation,” he said, stressing the importance of case-by-case review.
The Commissioner also called on members of the public to play an active role in ensuring compliance.
“We encourage the public to take ownership of their environment. If you observe construction activities going on outside the approved hours, please report them to the appropriate authorities,” he urged.
The new policy has triggered a mix of caution and support from those within and around the construction industry.

Musa Tola, a construction worker at a site in Agodo-Egbe, Alimosho LGA, told NAN that while the restriction might slow project timelines, it could ultimately save lives.
“Sometimes we work overnight to meet deadlines, but safety is important. If the government is serious about this, we will have to adjust,” he said.
On the other hand, residents welcomed the move. Mrs. Ifeoma Uche, who lives in Idimu, said night construction work has been a major disturbance.
“Some sites work all night, and the noise disturbs everyone. I think this will bring some sanity,” she remarked.
The Lagos State Government has intensified its oversight of the construction sector in recent years following multiple cases of building collapse, some of which have resulted in loss of lives and properties.
The new construction hour restriction is part of a broader regulatory push by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, a key agency responsible for managing the city’s complex and fast-paced urban growth.
The government said enforcement of the restricted working hours will commence immediately, with designated agencies tasked with surveillance, inspection, and penalty enforcement.
