A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, was on Wednesday, arraigned before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Kuje for allegedly assaulting a cab driver at his Abuja residence.
His appearance was in connection with serious allegations that he assaulted a cab driver at his home in Abuja. The lawmaker, who is elected to represent the Aba North and South federal constituency of Abia State, is facing multiple charges, including abuse of office, assault, and making threats to the life of the driver.
During the court proceedings, Honorable Ikwechegh declared that he was not guilty of these charges, firmly stating his position. After considering the case and the request made by the defendant regarding bail, Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id stated that he was inclined to grant the application. In light of this, he decided to set the bail amount at N500,000, which is a significant sum.

Additionally, the court emphasized the importance of ensuring that two sureties are provided to support the bail application. These sureties must also be financially capable, as they need to demonstrate that they can cover the bail amount. Furthermore, the court outlined that these individuals must live within the jurisdiction of the court.
To prove their residency, the sureties are required to submit their utility bills. Following this decision, the court has scheduled the next hearing for this case for November 8, where the trial will continue.
