Liverpool took a giant step towards clinching the Premier League title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The result extended their lead at the top of the table to 11 points over second-place Arsenal, putting them in a strong position as they close in on their first league title in over three decades.

Mohamed Salah was once again the star for Liverpool, scoring his 30th goal of the season to give his side the lead, before turning provider to set up Dominik Szoboszlai for a second before halftime.

The win came just days after Liverpool’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid, but the Reds showed their resilience as they inflicted yet another sobering defeat on the reigning English champions.

For Manchester City, the loss continues a disappointing season that sees them now 20 points adrift of the leaders.

This defeat came as a blow to a team that has dominated English football under Pep Guardiola but now appears to be struggling with defensive frailties and the absence of key players, notably the injured Erling Haaland.

The pressure had been building on Liverpool after dropped points in two of their last three games against Everton and Aston Villa.

However, Arsenal’s shock 1-0 home defeat to West Ham on Saturday eased the pressure, giving Liverpool the breathing room to go into this crucial match with confidence.

From the start, Liverpool exposed City’s defensive vulnerabilities.

In the 14th minute, a well-executed set-piece saw Alexis Mac Allister’s corner flicked by Szoboszlai into Salah’s path, with his shot deflecting off Nathan Ake and past goalkeeper Ederson.

City tried to respond with some attacking threats of their own, but Liverpool’s defense held firm, while Salah capitalized on a long ball over the top in the 34th minute.

The Egyptian star’s pass found Szoboszlai, who made no mistake in doubling Liverpool’s lead.

Manchester City, who had over 70 percent possession, struggled to create clear-cut chances, and despite several promising moments, could not find the breakthrough.

City’s Moroccan winger Jeremy Doku caused problems for Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold but could not deliver the final ball.

On the other end, Liverpool’s counter-attacks almost saw them add more goals, with Curtis Jones’ third goal ruled out for offside and Ederson denying Luis Diaz with a stunning save.

Despite the loss, City remain in fourth place and will look to secure a top-five finish to guarantee Champions League qualification.

However, after four consecutive titles, the reigning champions now face an uphill battle, with Liverpool looking ever more likely to surpass Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight titles.

With Salah’s incredible form this season—25 goals and 16 assists in 27 Premier League appearances—Liverpool are poised to end their long wait for a title, while City, once the dominant force in English football, appear to be a team in transition.
