Lookman, Nnadozie lead Nigeria’s charge for CAF awards glory

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the final shortlists for the prestigious 2024 CAF Awards, with Nigerian stars Ademola Lookman and Chiamaka Nnadozie making the cut in the men’s and women’s Player of the Year categories, respectively.

The announcement, made on Thursday night, solidifies Nigeria’s continued prominence in African football.

Lookman, the Atalanta forward, seeks to succeed his compatriot Victor Osimhen, who clinched the men’s award last year.

Meanwhile, Nnadozie, the Paris FC goalkeeper, aims to emulate Asisat Oshoala, the last Nigerian to win the women’s prize.

Ademola Lookman, 27, had a stellar year, highlighted by his hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final and contributions at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, where he registered three goals and three assists.

His performances have drawn widespread acclaim, with analysts pointing to his adaptability and big-game temperament as key assets.

“Lookman’s consistency for both club and country has been phenomenal,” noted football analyst Tunde Adebayo.

“He’s not just a scorer but a creator, and his ability to rise to the occasion in crucial matches is what sets him apart in this competitive shortlist.”

Chiamaka Nnadozie, on the other hand, has been a rock for Paris FC and the Super Falcons. Her heroics at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where she was instrumental in Nigeria’s quarterfinal run, underline her claim for the award.

Additionally, she is also in contention for the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award, a title she won last year in its inaugural edition.

“Chiamaka is redefining what it means to be a modern goalkeeper,” said sports journalist Ifeanyi Okoye. “Her composure, shot-stopping ability, and leadership make her a deserving finalist in not one but two categories.”

Adding to Nigeria’s prospects, both the men’s and women’s national teams—the Super Eagles and the Super Falcons—are finalists in the team of the year categories.

This recognition comes after consistent performances in major tournaments, bolstering Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in African football.

The awards ceremony, scheduled for Monday in Marrakech, Morocco, will also celebrate achievements in other categories, including coaches, youth players, and clubs.

Nigeria’s strong presence in the CAF Awards highlights the nation’s enduring influence on African football, even amid stiff competition from emerging talents across the continent.
