LP journalist defeats APGA, PDP, APC in Anambra

A renowned journalist and former Editor of The Source magazine, Afam Ogene of the Labour Party (LP) has won the Ogbaru Federal Constituency supplementary election in Anambra State.

Ogene defeated the candidates of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to emerge winner on Saturday.

The results were announced Saturday night at Atani, the Headquarters of Ogbaru Local Government Area (LGA) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer (RO), Prof. Kingsley Ubaorji of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

The RO said Ogene of LP polled 10,851 out of the total votes cast.

He was followed by the PDP candidate, Chuchu Onyema, who polled 10,619 votes, Arinze Awogu, candidate of Anambra Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of APGA, scored 10,155 votes to finish third.

Others contestants, including Mrs. Nkechi Isamade of APC scored 303 votes, Nwachukwu Victor of ADC scored 39 votes, Obunne Celestine of NNPP scored 124 votes while Nwadialor C. of SDP scored 27.

According to the RO, “Afam Ogene of the Labour Party, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes cast is declared winner of the election.”

Before the supplementary election, the PDP candidate led by over a thousand votes, while APGA came second, followed by LP.

However, when the result was summed up with the previous February 25th election, the Labour Party Candidate came first followed by PDP Candidate, and APGA as second and third.

The contest changed when, before the election, the presidential candidate of LP, Mr Peter Obi went to the riverine area to campaign for Ogene, who had been at the green between 2011 and 2015

The election in Ogbaru Federal Constituency, was declared inconclusive by INEC, after the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections.
