A 39-year-old man in the United States has been accused of deliberately setting fire to the home of his paraplegic wife, resulting in her death.

Justin Martez Seals has been charged with capital murder over the death of his 32-year-old wife, Mekayla Rembert, in Birmingham.

Prosecutors allege that Seals intentionally started a fire in December 2025 while Rembert was inside the detached garage where she lived.

Investigators say the blaze was ignited using gasoline or another accelerant. Emergency responders discovered Rembert’s body inside the charred structure around 9 p.m., and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities reported that Seals later told police he had been at a nearby store when the fire started and claimed he was unaware of what was happening. However, store employees told investigators that Seals had made troubling comments about fire and gasoline, allegedly stating, “My girl is dead.”

Neighbours and relatives told authorities that the couple frequently argued, and that Seals had openly expressed dislike for his wife. One neighbour reportedly witnessed Seals outside the property yelling that his daughter was trapped inside the burning garage.

Fire investigators identified burn patterns in the bedroom area and near the front door, which authorities say indicate that the fire was deliberately set.

Seals’ attorney, Lauren Presley, has denied the accusations, arguing that no witness saw Seals start the fire and insisting that he attempted to rescue his wife.

Officials have officially ruled Rembert’s death a homicide, and the case has been referred to a grand jury to determine whether Seals will face a formal indictment.

Family members described Rembert as a loving mother and kind-hearted woman whose death has left relatives devastated.

Criminal justice analysts say the case underscores the complexities of domestic violence investigations, particularly in incidents involving vulnerable victims. Dr. Emily Harrington, a forensic fire investigator, explained that “burn patterns near entry points and bedrooms are often key indicators of intentional ignition. In cases like this, investigators must piece together witness statements, physical evidence, and behavioural clues to determine culpability.”

Legal experts note that capital murder charges can carry severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty, depending on state laws and the outcome of the grand jury proceedings.

Family advocacy groups also emphasized the need for awareness around domestic violence, noting that early intervention and reporting can sometimes prevent tragedies like Rembert’s death.
