Manchester United have reportedly identified England head coach Thomas Tuchel as their preferred candidate to take over permanently at Old Trafford following Michael Carrick’s interim tenure.

The Red Devils turned to Carrick to steady the ship for the remainder of the season after parting ways with Ruben Amorim.

Since stepping into the role, Carrick has delivered a promising run of results, winning four consecutive matches before his side were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United on Tuesday.

Despite the encouraging start under Carrick, United’s hierarchy are understood to be in no rush to make a permanent appointment.

Sources close to the club suggest that while Carrick remains respected within the setup, he is not currently viewed as the leading contender to assume the role on a long-term basis when the season concludes.

A number of high-profile managers have been linked with the vacancy in recent weeks, including Carlo Ancelotti, Luis Enrique, Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi and Oliver Glasner.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Tuchel is emerging as the preferred option among key decision-makers at the club.

Tuchel, who currently manages the England national team, is expected to become available in July following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.

His contract with the Football Association is set to expire after the tournament, potentially clearing the way for negotiations with United.

The German tactician boasts an impressive managerial résumé, having previously managed top European clubs and won major honours, including the UEFA Champions League.

His experience at the highest level is believed to align with United’s ambition to return to consistent domestic and continental success.

While no formal approach has yet been confirmed, the situation is expected to develop in the coming months as United assess their long-term direction and evaluate potential candidates ahead of the summer.
