Manchester City eased some of the pressure on manager Pep Guardiola with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City on Sunday, securing only their second win in 14 games. Goals from Savinho and Erling Haaland either side of half-time ended a difficult run of eight away games without a win, giving City a crucial three points.
While the performance was still below the high standards that have defined City’s reign as English champions—winning an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles—the joy of Haaland’s header in the 74th minute underscored the importance of the result.
City celebrated their much-needed win, which temporarily halted their ongoing slump.
The victory lifted Manchester City into fifth place, although they remain 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who also have two games in hand.
Leicester, on the other hand, remain stuck in the relegation zone, still without a win in their last four games under manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Guardiola made just one change from the 1-1 Boxing Day draw against Everton, with Kevin De Bruyne replacing Jeremy Doku.
De Bruyne’s return from injury proved pivotal as his influence was immediately felt, showcasing what City has been missing for much of the season.
A well-timed pass from Rico Lewis found De Bruyne, who set up Haaland, but the Norwegian’s shot was saved by Leicester’s stand-in goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk.
Leicester, despite their poor form, threatened throughout the match.

They were unlucky not to capitalize on several chances in the first half. Jamie Vardy was denied a penalty after being brought down by Stefan Ortega, though he had strayed offside. Later, James Justin’s header hit the post following a scrappy goalmouth situation.
City took the lead in the 21st minute when Stolarczyk failed to adequately parry a long-range shot from Phil Foden, allowing Savinho to score from the rebound, marking his first goal for City.
Leicester had multiple opportunities to level the score early in the second half, with Justin mishitting a close-range shot that was cleared off the line by Manuel Akanji. Vardy also missed a great chance, heading over from Stephy Mavididi’s superb cross.
However, City sealed the win in the 74th minute when Savinho provided an excellent cross to Haaland, who powered home his 19th goal of the season, ending a four-game goal drought and putting an end to City’s miserable run on the road.
The result brought a sigh of relief for Guardiola and his team, though their performance suggests that much improvement is needed to mount a serious title challenge.
