Sadio Mane took up a central position against Watford to lead the Liverpool line with devastating effect.
The Senegalese attacker scored two goals inside the opening 20 minutes, the first a proper striker’s header, the second an impudent backheel the audacity of which Reds fans have come to expect from the player.
It was an outrageous second goal from Mane after a stunning pinpoint cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold and pushed Jurgen Klopp’s side on to hammer Watford 5-0.
“Trent made a very good cross and I was in the box, I was a lucky boy and I scored”, Mane told liverpoolfc.com
“It’s one of [the most adventurous goals I’ve scored], yes!
“But the most important thing is the three points and we got it, so I’m happy.
“It was my first time since I came to Liverpool I played centrally. I always said I’m here for the team, so I try to play any position the coach asks me to play to help the team.
“We started fast in the game, we moved quickly with and without the ball and created many chances. We scored five goals and we deserved the win.
“The team was fantastic, everybody played well. It was the key.”
Next up for Liverpool is the Merseyside derby against Everton on Sunday at Goodison Park.
Mane scored the winning goal at the Blues’ home ground in December 2016, following up Daniel Sturridge’s shot which hit the post, and he said his side are going to do “everything” to try a win there again.
“The win [against Watford] gives us more confidence,” he added.
“We know playing against Everton is never easy. But we are a great team and we are used to playing this kind of game. We’re going to go there and try to do everything to win there.”
