A former Senior Special Assistant on Civil Society and NGOs to the Delta State Governor, Mr. Victor Ojei, has come out strongly against the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the movement as a “political coup” and a dire threat to democratic values in Delta State.

In a press statement issued in Asaba on Sunday, Ojei — popularly known in activist circles as Wong Box — did not mince words as he condemned the cross-carpeting trend led by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and several other high-ranking PDP members.

“This mass defection is not only an act of betrayal; it is a political coup against the people of Delta State,” Ojei declared. “It is a desperate attempt by corrupt elites to hijack our state and enslave our democracy under one-party tyranny.”

Ojei, who resigned from his government position following the defections, described the actions of the defectors as “shameless” and “unprincipled.”

He warned that the trend portends the emergence of a dangerous political monopoly in the state, and possibly across Nigeria, as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

He emphasized the grave implications of allowing such consolidation of political power, likening it to an erosion of the nation’s democratic foundation.

“We are witnessing a gradual collapse of opposition voices, and if left unchecked, it will culminate in the death of political plurality and accountability,” he stated.

Ojei, who also leads the Young Nigerian Rights Organisation, made a passionate appeal to civil society groups, youth organisations, and pro-democracy advocates to rise in resistance. “We reject this APC-PDP unholy marriage,” he said.

“We refuse to follow the sellouts. Instead, we stand with the people, with the true PDP, and with the values of justice and democracy.”

Pledging to mobilise a broad coalition of like-minded opposition voices, Ojei expressed his determination to fight back through democratic means.

“Our goal is clear: to rescue Delta State and eventually unseat the APC at the federal level through democratic revolution,” he said. “We invite every concerned Delta citizen to stand with us. The battle lines are drawn. Delta is not for sale. We are not for sale. And the people will have the final say.”

Ojei’s remarks have sparked renewed discussions about the state of opposition politics in Nigeria and the growing concern over what critics describe as an emerging one-party dominance at both state and national levels.
