The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for establishing round-the-clock emergency response centres across the country to tackle school-related security threats.

The initiative, spearheaded by the National Coordinator of the Schools Protection Squad (SPS), CP Abayomi Shogunle, was announced during a stakeholders’ forum held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

NANS described the move as a bold and strategic response to rising insecurity in and around schools and a major boost to the Federal Government’s Safe Schools Initiative under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

In a statement issued by its President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, NANS praised the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, for his “visionary leadership and commitment to making schools safe havens for learning.”

“This proactive step shows that the Nigeria Police Force is serious about tackling the threats of abductions, violence, and other crimes that have disrupted education and instilled fear in our communities,” Oladoja said.

A National Step Toward Safer Schools

According to NANS, the creation of 24/7 emergency response centres and the deployment of the Schools Protection Squad represent a turning point in Nigeria’s efforts to secure its educational institutions. These measures are expected to provide timely intervention in crisis situations and act as a deterrent to criminal elements targeting schools.

The emergency centres can be reached via the dedicated line 08077357777, which is now open to students, staff, and the public for rapid reporting and coordinated police response.

“This is not just a policy on paper,” Oladoja added. “It is a functional, technology-driven intervention that integrates CCTV surveillance, drones, and multi-agency collaboration to protect students and teachers alike.”

Students Urged to Stay Alert and Involved

The NANS President urged Nigerian students to take full advantage of the initiative by remaining vigilant, reporting suspicious activity, and participating in school safety sensitization programs organized by the police.

“Security is a shared responsibility. Students must be partners in safeguarding their schools by cooperating with security personnel and school authorities,” he said.

NANS also praised the NPF’s collaborative strategy, which involves partnerships with other security agencies, school management, community leaders, and civil society to create a sustainable and inclusive security framework for educational institutions.

A Boost to Human Capital Development

Beyond physical safety, NANS emphasized that improving school security directly contributes to reducing the number of out-of-school children and advancing Nigeria’s broader goals for human capital development.

“When students feel safe, learning improves. And when schools are secure, we can significantly reduce dropout rates and strengthen the nation’s future workforce,” the statement noted.

Continued Advocacy for Safe Learning

NANS reiterated its commitment to supporting all initiatives that enhance student welfare and ensure uninterrupted access to quality education. The association vowed to continue working with stakeholders to push for policies that prioritize the safety and well-being of learners nationwide.

“The right to education includes the right to a safe environment,” Oladoja said. “NANS will always stand with efforts that uphold this right and protect the future of Nigerian students.”
