The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called on telecommunications industry stakeholders to provide their insights on the use of the 6GHz spectrum band for Wi-Fi 6 and International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT).
This initiative aligns with the Commission’s focus on collaboration as outlined in its strategic goals to enhance Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, represented by the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, made the announcement during his keynote address at the Annual Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies. The event was held in Lagos on Thursday.
Dr. Maida highlighted the significant advancements in the telecommunications sector and underscored the need for inclusive decision-making. He stated, “In line with global best practices, the Commission’s actions must be guided by informed decisions that consider the inputs of all industry stakeholders.”
He emphasized that the NCC’s strategic objectives are anchored on key factors, including people, collaboration, data, compliance, and digitalization.
“As part of our traditionally institutionalized policy of participatory regulation, we are here to elicit your comments and inputs on the use of the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 and IMT applications,” Dr. Maida remarked.
The 6GHz spectrum, which spans from 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz, has been identified as a crucial resource to meet the growing demand for high-speed internet and advanced applications.
Dr. Maida noted that Wi-Fi remains integral to distributing fixed broadband connectivity across homes, offices, and various environments.
He explained that existing Wi-Fi frequencies, such as 5GHz and 2.4GHz (used for Wi-Fi 5), are struggling to handle the rising demand for capacity. “It is imperative to identify additional frequency bands to complement the 5GHz and 2.4GHz,” he stated, highlighting the potential of the 6GHz band to alleviate this pressure.
Dr. Maida pointed out that the recently concluded 2023 World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-23) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, allocated the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi and IMT applications.
“This allocation followed a comprehensive study cycle process that culminated in the decision at WRC-23, which offered specific recommendations on utilizing the band for different applications,” he said.
The EVC elaborated on the critical role of the 6GHz band in addressing connectivity challenges. He explained how Wi-Fi is essential for enterprise environments, where it handles large volumes of data, connects numerous devices simultaneously, and provides improved reliability, higher data throughput, and reduced latency.
Dr. Maida reiterated the importance of collaboration, urging stakeholders to actively participate in shaping the policies that will govern the use of the 6GHz band. He emphasized that their inputs would ensure that Nigeria remains aligned with global technological advancements while addressing local connectivity needs.
The NCC’s proactive approach to engaging stakeholders highlights its commitment to fostering innovation and ensuring the efficient use of available spectrum resources to meet the growing demands of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
