On Friday, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, inaugurated a 10,000 tons per annum galvanizing plant constructed by Daewoo Engineering Nigeria Limited.

This facility, located at Abam-ama, Okrika, Rivers State, is part of the Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) Train 7 Project.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by NLNG’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Philip Mshelbila.

The galvanizing plant, which serves as a capacity development initiative, fulfills NCDMB’s mandate that major EPC projects in Nigeria must include legacy investments to bridge critical capacity gaps in the oil and gas industry.

Ogbe praised NLNG and Daewoo Engineering for meeting the Nigerian Content legacy requirement, noting that the new hot-dip galvanizing plant boosts Nigeria’s galvanizing capacity to over 180,000 tons annually, alongside facilities by Dorman-Long Engineering, Sparkwest Steel Industries, and African Industries Group.

The plant will support the Nigerian oil and gas sector, as well as telecommunications, power, and transport industries that require galvanized materials.

Ogbe also highlighted the potential for Nigerian galvanizing plants to gain patronage from other African countries under the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement, provided they maintain quality standards and competitiveness.

He affirmed that the development of key industry capacities is helping Nigeria achieve its 70% Nigerian Content target by 2027, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to pro-local production reforms.

In his remarks, Dr. Mshelbila reiterated NLNG’s dedication to Nigerian Content objectives, especially in the Train 7 Project on Bonny Island.

He emphasized the importance of steel protection for durability in the energy sector, noting that galvanizing enhances operational efficiency and extends equipment lifespan.

Represented by NLNG’s General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, Mr. Andy Odeh, Mshelbila expressed pride in the significant progress of the Train 7 Project, which includes the integration of advanced technologies and the achievement of key construction milestones.

The event concluded with a tour of the plant by industry executives, including representatives from NLNG, NCDMB, Daewoo Construction, and other key stakeholders in the oil and gas industry.
