The convoy of a former Governor of Anambra State and ex-Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, was attacked on Wednesday along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

Ngige’s media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, confirmed the incident on Thursday, stating that the former governor was not in the convoy at the time of the attack.

According to him, gunmen disguised in police and army uniforms ambushed the team and opened fire on the pilot vehicle.

A policeman in the lead car was shot, and the attackers reportedly stole his rifle and uniform before escaping. The pilot car was heavily damaged, with bullet holes covering its body.

Chukwuelobe added that the ambush also led to civilian casualties.

A woman who attempted to record the shooting on her phone was tragically killed, while a shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening was shot and sustained serious injuries.

He has since undergone a medical procedure and is expected to recover fully.

“No policeman was killed,” the aide clarified. “The escort leader who was shot has been operated upon and should make full recovery. The shop owner was fortunate the bullets did not hit his spine.”

He further disclosed that Dr Ngige has personally reached out to confirm the situation and expressed deep condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life. The former governor also pledged to support the injured victims and ensure they receive proper medical care.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the attack.
