The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning against any efforts aimed at stifling Nigerians’ fundamental right to express their opinions, especially in light of upcoming nationwide protests.
The labour union emphasized the need for the government to engage protesters constructively rather than resorting to measures that could curtail citizens’ rights to voice grievances.
In a direct appeal to President Bola Tinubu, the NLC urged him to heed the calls of Nigerians grappling with hunger and widespread hardship across the nation.
Scheduled for August 1, nationwide protests under hashtags #TinubuMustGo and #Revolution2024 have stirred significant public discourse.
However, the Presidency condemned these calls as treasonable acts, linking the hashtags to the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and accusing their supporters of inciting unrest.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, characterized the protest sponsors as anarchists in a recent tweet.
Amidst escalating tensions, NLC President Joe Ajaero cautioned against a confrontational approach from the government towards Nigerians.
He emphasized the urgent need for dialogue, citing widespread economic frustration detailed in recent National Bureau of Statistics reports showing millions living below the extreme poverty line.
Meanwhile, Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, urged residents to refrain from participating in the protests, citing potential security risks. He highlighted police efforts to maintain peace and protect citizens, appealing for cooperation to safeguard recent infrastructural developments.
The NLC’s call for constructive engagement and the government’s plea for security underscore a volatile backdrop as the nation prepares for potential unrest. Citizens are left balancing their constitutional rights with concerns for public safety amidst ongoing economic challenges.
