The ongoing dispute between Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, took a surprising turn on Sunday when the Department of State Services (DSS) prevented Shaibu from approaching the governor.
The incident occurred at the New Festival Hall of Government House, Benin, during a church service commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the creation of Edo State.
Shaibu, who was attending as a guest, attempted to greet Obaseki, but was stopped by a DSS operative just a few meters away.
Obaseki, accompanied by his wife, Betsy, and Charles Aniagwu, a Delta State Commissioner, averted his gaze as Shaibu attempted to explain to the plain-clothed security operative. Despite Shaibu’s efforts, the operative remained firm, leading Shaibu to eventually return to his seat.

However, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Andrew Okungbowa, clarified that the DSS operative was merely carrying out his duties.
“Whatever transpired at the church service was not orchestrated by the governor, nor was he aware of the actions of his security aides. In fact, the security personnel were performing their duties. Furthermore, the governor was unaware that the deputy intended to greet him. As it was a public event, the security aides had an obligation to protect their principal,” Okungbowa stated.
Following the embarrassing incident, the deputy governor spoke with journalists at the venue, affirming his unwavering loyalty to the governor.
He also referred to Obaseki as his elder brother.
