The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has raised concerns over recent security advisories issued by the United States regarding Nigeria, warning that the development signals worsening insecurity and declining international confidence in the country.
Obi’s reaction follows reports of a U.S. decision to evacuate some embassy personnel from Nigeria amid heightened security concerns. In a strongly worded statement shared via his social media platforms, he described the move as a troubling indicator of the country’s deteriorating security situation and urged Nigerian authorities to treat it as a national emergency.
He noted that Nigeria currently ranks fourth on the Global Terrorism Index, yet continues to face persistent violence, rising casualties, and repeated attacks affecting both rural and urban communities. According to him, the situation has created an atmosphere of fear that threatens national stability and economic progress.
Obi argued that governance priorities have become misaligned, alleging that political competition and maneuvering are being placed above the safety and welfare of citizens. He said the U.S. advisory reflects growing international concern about Nigeria’s ability to contain escalating security challenges.
He also referenced recent reports of the killing of a senior military officer in Borno State, describing the incident as a grim reminder of the risks faced by both civilians and members of the armed forces in ongoing counter-insurgency operations.

According to him, many Nigerians can no longer safely engage in daily activities such as travelling, worshipping, or working without fear of attack, a situation he said is undermining investor confidence and national development prospects.
Obi reiterated that the primary duty of any government is the protection of lives and property, adding that years of leadership shortcomings have placed enormous strain on the country’s security agencies, who continue to operate under difficult conditions.
Drawing a historical analogy, he likened the current political leadership to Nero, accusing the ruling class of being distracted by politics while the nation grapples with deepening insecurity. He warned that without security and stability, Nigeria risks weakening its democratic and developmental future.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Federal Government regarding Obi’s comments or the reported U.S. security advisory.
