The Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State has commended the lawmakers at the State House of Assembly over the impeachment of their speaker, Olakunle Oluomo.

Oluomo, a member representing Ifo Constituency 1, was impeached on Tuesday by 18 of the 26 lawmakers during a plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Bolanle Ajayi.

He was said to have been impeached over alleged gross misconduct and financial misappropriation, among others.

The Assembly, however, elected a member representing Odeda Constituency, Oludaisi Elemide, as the new speaker.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen, the state PDP Publicity Secretary, Akinloye Bankole, described the impeachment of the former speaker as a welcome development.

According to him, Oluomo has been found wanting since the day he assumed office, saying “his removal should have come long before now.”

He said, “The removal of the former speaker, Honourable Oluomo is long overdue. That is in the sense that since he became the speaker of the House, he has been fingered several times in all manner of misappropriation.

“His emergence after their election last year was so controversial because elected members of the Assembly preferred another person. But for the high-handedness and democratic tendency of the sinking ship called APC, they were able to force him into the house. Ordinarily, he should not be holding such a sensitive office. He was imposed on the house by the leadership of the APC and the governor of the state.

“We must express gratitude to the members of the state Assembly for their courage to put a permanent stop to the era of insensitivity that Hon Oluomo represents.”

Meanwhile, the APC Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, declined to comment on the matter when our correspondent put a call across to him.

He said, “I don’t have any reaction, my brother. If that is what you want. Contact your correspondent in Abeokuta.”

However, an earlier report by the correspondent indicated that the APC secretary failed to pick up his calls while the messages sent to his WhatsApp were not replied.
