As the Easter season is celebrated across the globe, the Ogun State Government has issued a strong call to action for all residents and visitors: ensure the environment remains clean, healthy, and safe during the festivities — or face the full weight of the law.
In a statement released in Abeokuta, the State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, congratulated Christians and all residents for witnessing another Easter season.
He, however, emphasized that environmental cleanliness must not take a backseat during the celebrations.
“The Easter holiday is a time for joy, reflection, and celebration — but not at the expense of our environment,” Dr. Oresanya stated. “We expect every resident to take responsibility by cleaning their surroundings, clearing drainages, and properly storing their waste in covered containers for collection.”
To handle the anticipated increase in waste during the festive period, all Private Sector Participants (PSP) in waste management have been instructed to remain fully operational throughout the holiday.
In addition, the state government has deployed environmental officials and equipment across Ogun for Special Easter Environmental Duties.
“Our aim is simple — to maintain the clean, safe, and beautiful environment Ogun State is known for,” Oresanya added.
Addressing market activities, the Commissioner issued a firm warning against street trading and other illegal practices.
He reminded traders that Environmental Marshalls will be on ground across all markets to enforce environmental regulations.
“We will not tolerate trading on roadsides, medians, or from vehicle booths. There is enough space in our markets to accommodate all legitimate traders. Any violation will attract immediate seizure of goods and prosecution,” he warned.
Dr. Oresanya also called on motorists to drive with caution, noting that street sweepers will be active statewide during the holiday.
Carnival organizers were reminded that blocking of roads for parties or events is strictly prohibited under Ogun State’s environmental laws.
“This government is fully prepared to protect public health, safety, and order this Easter.
We expect total compliance from everyone. Celebrate responsibly — or be ready to face the consequences,” he concluded.
