Oil, luxury and bribes: Diezani’s London trial begins
Spread The News

London is set to host the high-stakes corruption trial of former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, beginning Monday.

The 65-year-old former minister, who once held one of the most powerful positions in Nigeria’s oil sector, will face a six-count bribery charge tied to her tenure between 2010 and 2015 under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The charges, brought by UK prosecutors, allege that Alison-Madueke received lavish financial and material benefits from individuals linked to two energy companies over a four-year period.

According to the indictment, these benefits were exchanged for favorable treatment and improper performance of her ministerial duties.

Luxury Benefits and the Alleged ‘Bribe Package’

Prosecutors say the alleged bribes were far from modest. The benefits allegedly included: Use and refurbishment of London properties; Staff costs and luxury furniture; Chauffeur-driven cars; Private jet flights; £100,000 in cash; School fees for her son; Designer goods from Harrods and Louis Vuitton; Additional private jet services

The prosecution argues that these benefits were not mere gifts but rewards for awarding multi-million-pound contracts during her time as petroleum minister.

A Trial Set to Last Weeks

Alison-Madueke appeared in court last week for preliminary hearings and jury selection, and the trial is expected to last between 10 and 12 weeks. Two other individuals, Doye Agama and Olatimbo Ayinde, are also facing related bribery charges in connection with the case.

Alison-Madueke has denied the allegations. She has been on bail in the UK since her arrest in London in 2015.

A Wider International Investigation

In 2023, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) formally charged her, alleging she abused her power and accepted financial rewards in exchange for awarding lucrative contracts.

The NCA also shared evidence with US prosecutors, leading to the recovery of assets worth $53.1 million. These assets included luxury real estate in California and New York, and a 65-metre superyacht named Galactica Star.

From Architecture to the World’s Oil Stage

Diezani Alison-Madueke’s rise in politics was marked by historic milestones. Born in Port Harcourt in 1960, she studied architecture in Britain and the United States before joining Shell Nigeria. Her political career began in 2007 when she became the Minister of Transport, later serving as Minister of Mines and Steel Development, before being appointed Minister of Petroleum Resources in 2010.

Her influence peaked in 2014 when she became the first female president of OPEC, holding the position for about a year—a landmark achievement that also positioned her as one of Africa’s most influential energy figures.

A Trial That Could Define Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Narrative

As the trial opens in London, the case is expected to reignite global debate over corruption in Nigeria’s oil sector, as well as the role of international enforcement agencies in prosecuting high-level officials.

With weeks of testimony and evidence ahead, the world will be watching closely as one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures faces one of its most significant corruption trials abroad.
