Dr. Eugene Maxwell, a Warri-based optometrist, has urged individuals who spend long hours on computers or use mobile phones frequently to wear protective gear to prevent potential eye complications.
In an interview with the press on Wednesday, Dr. Maxwell warned that the ultraviolet rays (UVR) emitted by computers and cell phones can cause serious damage to the eyes.
Dr. Maxwell also highlighted the risks faced by people who are exposed to intense sunlight for prolonged periods, such as street vendors roasting yam and plantain, advising them to wear hats and sunglasses to protect their eyes from harmful rays.
“Cases of eye conditions like cataract and glaucoma are on the rise, and this is largely due to a lack of awareness,” Dr. Maxwell said.
He emphasized the importance of regular eye examinations for early detection of eye problems. “The eye lens is a fragile organ that begins to degenerate after the age of 40, leading to conditions such as cataracts, which cause part of the lens to become opaque.”
Dr. Maxwell explained that cataracts, which can impede vision, may be congenital or hereditary.

However, they can also develop as a result of systemic conditions such as diabetes or the consumption of toxic substances.
He urged individuals to practice regular eye checks, avoid smoking, and manage chronic health conditions to prevent eye complications.
“Early detection of cataracts is key to effective treatment,” he added.
He also recommended that people adopt healthy lifestyle habits such as consuming nutritious foods and antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E to maintain eye health.
Dr. Maxwell further advised the public to protect their eyes by wearing sunglasses and hats, reducing alcohol intake, and engaging in regular eye care to prevent complications.
