Outrage as President Akufo-Addo unveils statue of himself in Ghana

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has sparked a heated debate after unveiling a statue of himself during a visit to the country’s Western Region

The monument, positioned outside the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi was meant to commemorate the president’s development initiatives during his time in office, according to the region’s minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah

The recent unveiling of the statue sparked a significant amount of criticism across various social media platforms. A large number of people took to these platforms to accuse the president of engaging in what they described as self-glorification. This criticism was not limited to just politicians; even ordinary Ghanaians joined in to express their discontent. They raised important questions about the necessity of erecting a statue at a time when there were many essential development projects that had not yet been completed and still required attention and resources.

One notable response came from opposition Member of Parliament Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah. He expressed his views on X, emphasizing that the residents of the Western Region deserve a lot more than these kinds of self-serving displays. His comments echoed the feelings of many individuals who believed that the focus should be on pressing issues rather than the construction of monuments that might be seen as unnecessary or extravagant. This widespread disapproval reflects a broader concern among citizens about prioritizing the country’s development needs over personal projects that do not contribute directly to the welfare of the community.

Akufo-Addo who was set to leave office in January after completing 2 terms toured various regions as part of a “thank-you tour.”
