Oyo State anti-corruption agency secures conviction of civil servant for employment fraud

The Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) has secured the conviction of Wahab Olabanji, a former Chief Executive Officer (Accounts) at the state Hospital Management Board, for fraudulently collecting money from job seekers under the guise of offering them employment.

The Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) has successfully secured the conviction of Wahab Olabanji, a former Chief Executive Officer (Accounts) on Grade Level 14 at the state Hospital Management Board, for fraudulently collecting money from unsuspecting job applicants.

Olabanji was accused of obtaining various sums of money from individuals who applied for the last recruitment exercises at both the Hospital Management Board and the state Teaching Service Commission, promising them employment in exchange for the payments.

The Chairman of OYACA, Justice Eni Esan (retd.), disclosed the conviction in a statement issued in Ibadan, the state capital, on Tuesday.

Justice Esan stated that Olabanji was convicted on a 30-count charge which included official corruption, obtaining money under false pretense, and conversion.

After a rigorous 17-month trial, the court delivered its judgment on Friday, August 1, 2025, finding the defendant guilty on all 30 counts.

For each count, Olabanji was sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option of a N50,000 fine.

In addition to the sentence, the court ordered the defendant to repay all sums he fraudulently obtained from his victims within three months, aiming to remedy the financial losses suffered due to his corrupt and fraudulent actions.

Justice Esan reiterated OYACA’s unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for corruption within the public service of Oyo State, signaling the agency’s continued efforts to ensure accountability and integrity in government recruitment processes.
