A 27-year-old man has been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command after allegedly stabbing a commercial motorcyclist to death in Igbesa during a failed attempt to steal his motorcycle — the second fatal stabbing incident in the state within 48 hours.

Detectives of the Igbesa Division arrested Chidi Ebere, 27, for the alleged murder of 36-year-old commercial motorcyclist Sunday Ogbu. The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m. The suspect had allegedly posed as a passenger before attempting to hijack the motorcycle, leading to a violent altercation in which he stabbed the motorcyclist to death.

According to a police statement, the suspect boarded the motorcycle operated by Ogbu and attacked him in an attempt to seize the bike, resulting in a violent struggle. A witness at the scene raised the alarm, prompting police to rush to the area. The victim was rescued and taken to hospital for urgent medical attention but was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene, while the motorcycle and a knife believed to have been used in the attack were recovered as evidence.

The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists on Thursday, noting that the case had been escalated for further legal action.

The killing of Sunday Ogbu underscores a persistent threat facing commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as Okada riders, across Nigeria, who are frequently targeted by criminals due to the portable and high-resale value of their motorcycles. The practice of boarding a motorcycle under the pretense of being a passenger before violently attempting to take it is a well-documented pattern of crime in densely populated southwestern states.

Ogun State Commissioner of Police CP Bode Ojajuni condemned the attack and promised that justice would be served. He urged members of the public to remain alert and to report any suspicious or violent behaviour to the nearest police station.

Wednesday’s killing of Ogbu comes just a day after another fatal stabbing rocked the same state. A 25-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, was separately arrested in the Olambe area of Ifo Local Government Area for allegedly stabbing five people — two fatally — over a failed business transaction in the early hours of Tuesday, April 7. That case has also been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for prosecution.

Members of the public have been urged to report emergencies or share information through the Ogun State Police Command’s toll-free Gateway Shield line at 0800 000 9111, or through emergency numbers including 0906 283 7609 and 0912 014 1706.

The rapid apprehension of the suspect in both incidents has been attributed to swift detective work by divisional police operatives responding to public tip-offs — a model authorities say they hope will deter further violent crime in the state.
