The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a dominant victory in the recently concluded local government elections in Osun State, claiming all 30 chairmanship and 332 councillorship seats across the state’s local government areas.

The elections, held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, have sparked mixed reactions among political stakeholders.

The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), led by Chairman Barrister Hashim Abioye, proceeded with the elections despite significant security advisories.

Both the Nigeria Police Force and the Attorney General of the Federation had urged the postponement of the elections due to concerns over security threats in the state.

However, OSSIEC moved forward, citing a court ruling that mandated the elections be conducted as scheduled.

The results have been met with praise from PDP supporters, who view the outcome as a clear indication of the party’s continued popularity and the trust the electorate places in its governance.

The PDP’s landslide victory in all the contested seats is seen as a reaffirmation of the party’s political dominance in the region.

On the other hand, opposition parties, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC), have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the process.

The APC has raised allegations of electoral irregularities, calling for a thorough investigation into the conduct of the polls.

These claims of malpractices have stirred concerns about the integrity of the election.

Adding to the controversy, there were reports of low voter turnout across the state, with some sources suggesting that parts of the population boycotted the elections.

The reasons behind this low participation remain unclear, but the situation has prompted further calls for electoral reform in the state.

According to reports, operatives from the Nigeria Police Force sealed the headquarters of the OSSIEC and arrested several election staff who were carrying out their duties across the state.

This action resulted in significant delays in the distribution of election materials, raising doubts about the efficiency and transparency of the election process.

As the political climate in Osun State remains charged, stakeholders are calling for a comprehensive review of the electoral process.

They stress the need for future elections to be conducted in a more transparent, credible, and secure manner.

However, as of now, the state government has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations or calls for an investigation into the election’s conduct.

The public now awaits official statements from the authorities, and the evolving political landscape in Osun will likely continue to be a topic of discussion as the state prepares for future elections.
