The Police Command in Lagos State has confirmed the tragic death of a 45-year-old labourer, Nwanneka Ogbonaya, who lost his life after being crushed by falling blocks at a construction site. The incident occurred on Friday at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the Opebi area of Ikeja, Lagos.

According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who briefed newsmen on Monday, the unfortunate accident was reported by the elder brother of the deceased. Ogbonaya had been working on a construction site where an old building was in the process of being demolished to make way for the construction of a new structure. It was during this demolition process that the blocks unexpectedly collapsed on him, resulting in severe bodily injuries.

Hundeyin explained that the impact of the falling blocks left Ogbonaya seriously injured and unconscious. His colleagues at the construction site acted swiftly, rushing him to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in an attempt to save his life. Unfortunately, despite the prompt efforts, the medical personnel at LASUTH could do little, and the doctor on duty later confirmed that Ogbonaya had succumbed to his injuries.’

The spokesperson noted that the incident has left the construction site and the surrounding community in shock. It serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by labourers working in high-risk environments, particularly during demolition activities. He also reiterated the need for strict safety protocols at construction sites to protect workers and prevent accidents of this nature.

Hundeyin added that the police had already commenced a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ogbonaya’s death. The investigation will aim to determine whether any negligence or safety violations contributed to the accident, and if anyone can be held accountable. The police are expected to collaborate with other relevant agencies, including the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Ministry of Physical Planning, to ensure that proper safety measures are enforced at construction sites across the state.

As the investigation progresses, Ogbonaya’s family, friends, and colleagues are mourning his loss, while hoping that the authorities will thoroughly review safety practices in the industry to prevent similar incidents in the future.
