The Ogun State Police Command has refuted claims that it arrested a rape victim who came forward with allegations of sexual assault in a viral TikTok video, stating the woman was taken for medical examination, not detention.
The controversy began after TikToker Mirabel (@mirab351) posted a distressing video claiming she had been sexually assaulted in her apartment in Ogijo, Ogun State. In the clip, which quickly went viral, she alleged that a stranger had broken into her home while she was unconscious, physically assaulted her, and raped her.
Following the viral post, social media users began claiming that Mirabel had been arrested, suggesting she may have fabricated the story due to alleged inconsistencies in her account, sparking widespread outrage.
Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi addressed the rumours in a statement on Thursday, clarifying that Mirabel reportedly presented herself voluntarily at the Ibafo Police Division on Wednesday, February 18, to file a formal report.
After preliminary evaluation, she was conveyed to Ogijo Division, the correct jurisdiction, where it was confirmed she was not in a stable condition to provide further details .
According to Babaseyi’s statement, “She was immediately taken for a comprehensive medical check-up, and her health is being closely monitored, as her wellbeing remains paramount.”
The police emphasized that the medical examination was part of standard protocol for sexual assault investigations, necessary for gathering forensic evidence while ensuring the victim receives appropriate care.
Women’s rights advocates have called for better communication from police when handling sensitive cases to prevent narratives that could discourage other victims from reporting sexual assault. They emphasized that clear communication about procedures can prevent misunderstandings that further traumatize survivors.
The case has reignited conversations about police handling of sexual violence cases in Nigeria, with activists calling for specialized training for officers who investigate such crimes and improved understanding of trauma and victim psychology.
