The Lagos State Government has issued an early warning to residents, forecasting an above-normal rainy season that will extend into December 2025.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, during a Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) press briefing held in Alausa on Sunday.

According to Wahab, the state is expected to experience a “longer-than-usual rainy season, beginning in late March and concluding in early December.” The average annual rainfall is predicted to reach 1,936mm, which surpasses the long-term average recorded between 1991 and 2020.

The commissioner attributed the forecast to the neutral phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is expected to persist for the first six to eight months of the year.

This climate pattern will contribute to increased precipitation levels across Lagos and its neighboring Ogun State.

“Lagos State, alongside Ogun State, will witness an increase in rainfall, with key areas such as Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe receiving above-normal precipitation levels,” Wahab explained.

For instance, Ikeja is expected to see its first rains on April 2 and the season will end on December 2, with an estimated annual rainfall of 1,900mm.

Badagry, on the other hand, will experience rainfall beginning on March 30, ending on December 4, with a projected annual rainfall of 1,978mm.

Wahab warned that the anticipated high rainfall amounts could result in flash floods, particularly in low-lying areas of the state. He also cautioned that strong winds at the beginning and end of the rainy season could pose risks to lives, properties, and economic activities.

“We anticipate that the high amounts of rainfall may lead to flash flooding events in some parts of the state. Strong winds are expected during the onset and end of the season, which could disrupt commercial activities, cause flight delays, and lead to revenue losses,” Wahab stated.

In response to the forecast, the Lagos State Government is ramping up flood control measures to mitigate the potential impact of the prolonged rainy season. Wahab emphasized that the government is working closely with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to provide accurate and timely weather updates for early warning and climate adaptation.

“The ministry is collaborating with NiMet in the annual Seasonal Climate Prediction, which has been a vital tool for farmers, planners, decision-makers, and businesses that could be affected by the rainy season,” he said.

He urged Lagos residents to remain vigilant, adhere to official weather updates, and take proactive measures to protect themselves and their property from potential weather-related hazards.

“Lagosians have been urged to stay alert, follow official weather updates, and take necessary precautions to safeguard their lives and properties as Greater Lagos prepares for an intense rainy season,” he concluded.
