Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to investigate the Moroccan Football Association (MFA) following a controversial series of incidents involving ball boys at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ferdinand’s comments come after video footage emerged showing ball boys removing towels from Senegal’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, during the AFCON final.

The same behaviour was reportedly witnessed earlier in the tournament during Nigeria’s semi-final clash with Morocco, where ball boys allegedly took towels from Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Speaking on his Rio Presents podcast, Ferdinand described the actions as “insane” and insisted that CAF must demand accountability from the Moroccan FA.

“The worst one (during the AFCON) was the ball boys trying to get the towels to stop the goalkeeper from drying his hands. That was insane,” Ferdinand said.

He further stressed that the incident requires official clarification, questioning the authority of ball boys to interfere with goalkeepers’ equipment.

“Someone has to get a hold of the Moroccan FA at some point. We need explanations,” Ferdinand added.

“What right do they’ve to not let goalkeepers dry their hands? It is a part of the game.”

Ferdinand’s remarks have intensified calls for CAF to address the matter and ensure that such disruptions do not recur in future competitions.

The incident has raised broader concerns about match conduct, fair play, and the role of stadium officials during high-stakes games.
