The Concerned Elders of Rivers State have issued a strong demand for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to tender an unreserved apology to former Governor Peter Odili.

This follows what the elders described as belittling and disrespectful comments Wike made about Odili, his family, and his medical institution, PAMO University of Medical Sciences.

In a statement released on Thursday, prominent leaders of Rivers State, including former Governor Celestine Omehia, Prince Uche Secondus, and others, expressed disappointment over Wike’s remarks.

The statement was also signed by former Deputy Governor Tele Ikuru, Senator Lee Maeba, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, and other notable figures.

The elders criticised Wike’s conduct during an event at a church in Ororgwe, where he allegedly made derogatory remarks about Dr. Odili. They argued that Wike’s behavior is an affront to the state’s long-held values of respect for elders and adherence to wisdom.

They highlighted Wike’s accusations that Odili had “chickened out” of the presidential race in 2006, explaining that Odili had stepped down at the directive of then-President Olusegun Obasanjo to ensure party stability. The elders drew a contrast, questioning if Wike would demonstrate similar loyalty if President Bola Tinubu asked him to step aside from a political race.

“Dr. Odili’s actions reflected loyalty, statesmanship, and respect for the greater good. Such qualities appear alien to Nyesom Wike,” the elders said.

The elders addressed several allegations Wike made against Odili:

The conflict reportedly escalated after Odili advised Wike against an alleged plan to impeach Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Wike’s refusal to heed the counsel led Odili to support Fubara’s administration.

Wike’s criticism of Odili’s family members, including Justice Mary Odili’s appointment as Pro-Chancellor of Rivers State University and Dr. Adaeze Oreh’s role as Commissioner for Health, were dismissed as baseless. The elders defended their qualifications and contributions to the state.

Wike’s claim of building a house for Odili was rebutted. The elders clarified that the house was a legal entitlement for former governors, not a personal gift from Wike.

The elders underscored the importance of respect for elders, particularly someone like Dr. Odili, whom they described as a political father, accomplished professional, and national statesman.

Elders are custodians of our heritage and values. Any affront to their dignity is an injury to the entire community. Wike’s remarks are unbecoming of a former governor and current federal minister,” the statement read.

They called on Wike to issue a public apology for his comments and urged him to adopt a more respectful and unifying approach in public discourse.

The elders emphasized the need for unity and decorum, urging Wike to act as a role model given his status as a former governor and serving minister. They warned that such public disagreements could harm the peace and stability of the state.

“We stand firm in demanding an apology from Chief Nyesom Wike for his actions, which have not only insulted Dr. Peter Odili and his family but also disrespected the people of Rivers State,” the statement concluded.
