Rivers LG polls fuel Wike–Tinubu political pact, shadow 2027 general election

Political observers are warning that the controversial Rivers State Local Government Elections could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as the outcome appears to have redrawn the political map of one of the country’s most strategic states.

With the All Progressives Congress (APC) sweeping 20 out of 23 chairmanship seats in the polls, analysts believe Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has firmly tightened his grip on Rivers politics.

Though still officially a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), critics accuse Wike of using his influence to advance APC’s interests and, by extension, President Bola Tinubu’s re-election strategy.

According to observers, Rivers—long a PDP stronghold—has now become a bargaining chip in national politics. Control of the state, with its vast oil wealth and voting power, is widely regarded as a potential decider in presidential contests.

By positioning himself as the gatekeeper of Rivers, Wike is seen as cementing his role as a kingmaker ahead of 2027.

A political analyst, Dr. Sani Abubakar, argued that while Wike may have succeeded tactically, the broader consequences could damage both him and the ruling APC:

“Posterity will not be kind. Nigerians see what is happening, and one day, they will give their verdict. What played out in Rivers was not democracy; it was political engineering designed for 2027. But such credibility gaps cannot be swept under the carpet.”

Credibility Deficit and Democratic Fears

Critics note that the credibility of the elections is already in question, with unusually high voter numbers announced despite reports of boycotts and low turnout. The controversy, they argue, risks undermining public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Jake Epelle, a civil society leader, warned that the Rivers episode could set a dangerous precedent:

“What happened was not an election but a democratic scam. If this is the dress rehearsal for 2027, then Nigerians should be very worried about the survival of democracy.”

Similarly, opposition figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have dismissed the polls as a “travesty,” accusing the Tinubu administration of preparing the ground for electoral manipulation.

2027 Calculations

For now, Wike’s hold on Rivers strengthens APC’s hand and may give Tinubu a head start in the 2027 race. But analysts caution that legitimacy matters as much as numbers.

“Yes, Wike has delivered Rivers on a platter,” Dr. Abubakar added, “but if Nigerians continue to lose faith in elections, voter apathy and political unrest could destabilize the system. What looks like victory today may become a liability tomorrow.”
