Despite months of denial, President Vladimir Putin of Russia finally ordered his troops to invade Ukraine on Thursday morning to the chagrin of the democratic world. For the past 48 hours, Ukraine has came under series of bombardments from Russian forces which have led to the death of many while thousands of civilians have fled to neighbouring countries. This is not the first time in the past few years Russia is launching an attack against Ukraine. In 2014 after a revolution that toppled a pro-Russia-backed President Viktor Yanukovych, Putin capitalized on the chaos to send his troops into Ukraine which eventually led to the annexation of Crimea in 2015.

Fast forward to the current conflict between both countries; President Putin who appears to be still seeing Ukraine as an extension of Russia despite the more than 30 years of the resolution of the Soviet Union, was never comfortable with the liberal President Volodymr Zelenskyy who has plans to join military defensive alliance – NATO. Ukraine joining NATO (the West) would never be in the political interest of Russia.

President Putin knew that Ukraine has the potential to become a big threat to Russia in the future if he allows its government to continue to hobnob with Western powers. So, the plan is always to dominate Ukraine as much as possible. It appears that President Putin might be succeeding in his plan as Russian troops have their work cut out for them in Donetsk and Luhansk – two separatist regions in Ukraine that are been supported by Moscow.

As Russian forces set to capture the capital Kiev, rumours are rife that Putin has a sinister plan to topple the democratically elected government of 44-year-old President Zelenskyy to partition Ukraine like what we have in North and South Korea.

The question now is, would it be fair for the fate of Ukraine with about 45 million people to be decided by Putin while the world watches? That is a bad precedent the European governments should not allow to take a foothold in world politics.
