Three security personnel drawn from different agencies collapsed on Tuesday during the inauguration ceremony of Chukwuma Soludo at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, as hundreds of officers stood for hours under intense heat during the ceremonial parade.

The affected officers included a male operative of the Nigeria Police Force, a male operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), and a female operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Witnesses said the police operative was the first to collapse while standing in formation during the parade. Shortly afterwards, the female NSCDC officer also slumped near the end of the ceremony.

Officials at the scene quickly moved to assist the affected personnel. The female officer was eventually escorted to a waiting ambulance after reportedly declining to be carried on a stretcher.

A source familiar with the incident disclosed that the police operative was resuscitated on site but remained unstable before being transported to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Amaku for further medical attention.

Preliminary accounts indicate that the collapses were likely triggered by exhaustion and prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight during the event.

Security personnel participating in ceremonial parades typically remain stationary for extended periods, often in heavy uniforms and protective gear, which can increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.

Medical experts note that heat exhaustion can lead to dizziness, fainting, and loss of consciousness, particularly when individuals are exposed to high temperatures without adequate hydration or rest.

The inauguration ceremony attracted a large crowd of dignitaries, government officials, traditional rulers, and residents, with tight security arrangements put in place across Awka.

Multiple security agencies were deployed to maintain order, manage traffic, and provide protection throughout the event.

The incident has renewed concerns about the welfare and working conditions of frontline security operatives, especially during large public events held under extreme weather conditions.

Analysts say agencies may need to review parade protocols, including provision of water, medical monitoring, shaded rest points, and rotation schedules to reduce health risks.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident or the medical status of the affected officers.
