With the upcoming general election in Nigeria, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been on its toes to ensure the number of registered voters is high. INEC aims to bump the figure from 84 million in 2019 to over 100 million by 2022.
As of the second quarter of 2022, the Commission has over 10.4 million new voters registrations, while over 8.6 million are already completed.
Out of the over 10.4 million new registrations by INEC, over 6 million of the registrees are Nigerian youths. Thus, accounting for 70% of newly registered voters. The men accounted for over 4.2 million, women over 4.3 million and people with disabilities (PWDs) 67,171.
Here are the states with the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria as of the second quarter of 2022.
Lagos
From the track record of Lagos state, it has always had the highest number of registered voters. In 2015, the state had over 5.8 million, while in 2019, it had over 6.57 million.
This year is not left out as INEC registered 371,760 new voters as of June 27, making the cumulative in the state to be over 6.94 million – the highest number in the country.
Kano
Lagos and Kano are hooked at the rib. Both states retain their position of highest registered voters. In 2015 and 2019, the northern state had over 4.9 million and 5.45 million registered voters, respectively.
The state registered about 380,582 new voters in late June this year. Combined, Kano has over 5.83 million voters.
Kaduna
Just as the first two states maintained their positions, the North-Western state in Nigeria retained its third position. With the 3.93 million in 2019 and the new 306,949 registered voters, the state has a total of 4.2 million registered voters.
Rivers
The state added over 372,406 new registered voters to its 2019 list of over 3.2 million voters. As of June 2022, the state had a total of over 3.5 million, making it the highest in the South-South region of the country.
Katsina
Although not pulling numbers like Kaduna and Kano as of June 2022, the North-Western state was one of the northern states with the highest number of registered voters in 2019.
Katsina had over 3.2 million registered voters in 2019. As of late June this year, INEC registered over 213,834 people in the state. This makes a total of over a 3.4million registered voters.
Delta
Delta state has the highest number of registered voters as of last month. It has a record of 396,900 new registered voters. With 2.84 million reported voters in 2019, it has a total of 3.24 million registered voters.
Oyo
In 2019, Oyo state had more registered voters than Delta state. Despite the decline in rank, the southwestern state still pulls its numbers. With over 2.9 million electorates in 2019 and 281,954 newly registered voters, the state has over 3.2 million registered voters.
