Seme Customs Seeks Improved Partnership with Stakeholders to Boost Efficiency
In a bid to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen security along Nigeria’s southwestern border, the Seme Customs Command has called for deeper collaboration with key stakeholders. Comptroller Benedict Oramalugo, the Controller of the Command, made this crucial call during a series of high-level meetings with traditional leaders and security agencies in Badagry, Lagos State, on February 19 and 20, 2025.
Oramalugo’s visit was part of a broader effort to foster stronger partnerships with those integral to the region’s security and economic stability. By engaging with traditional rulers and local security forces, the Seme Customs Controller aims to enhance communication channels and streamline operations at the busy border post, which serves as a gateway for trade between Nigeria and Benin.
During the visit, Comptroller Oramalugo emphasized the importance of collaboration between Customs, security agencies, and local communities. He noted that the effectiveness of Nigeria’s border security hinges on the ability of various stakeholders to work together and share vital information.

“We are at a pivotal moment in ensuring that our borders remain secure while facilitating the legal flow of goods and people. Strengthening our partnership with traditional rulers, local authorities, and security agencies will help improve enforcement and reduce smuggling and other illicit activities,” said Oramalugo.
The Seme border is a critical point for trade and security, handling a significant volume of imports and exports. The Customs Command has been at the forefront of efforts to curtail cross-border crimes, such as smuggling of contraband goods and human trafficking. Oramalugo’s proactive outreach to traditional leaders is aimed at fostering mutual trust and cooperation, ensuring that both government agencies and the local populace work hand in hand for the greater good.

He called for enhanced cooperation between all law enforcement bodies to create a seamless and more effective security framework for the region.
“We cannot do it alone. Customs is only one part of the puzzle. For the system to work efficiently, we need the full support of other law enforcement agencies and local stakeholders to ensure that we address the root causes of smuggling, trafficking, and other illegal activities,” he stressed.
The Comptroller highlighted the role of technology in improving operations at the border, such as the use of surveillance equipment and digital systems to track goods and prevent illicit trade. Oramalugo further emphasized the importance of continuous training and capacity building for Customs officers, ensuring they remain equipped to meet modern challenges.
Local business owners in the Badagry area also welcomed the initiative, with many noting that improved security at the border would foster a more conducive environment for legitimate trade and economic growth. Adeyemi Afolabi, a local importer, shared his support for the collaboration, expressing optimism that a more secure and efficient border would reduce delays and lower costs for traders.
“The current border situation sometimes causes delays, which affects our businesses. I believe that stronger partnerships between Customs, security agencies, and the community will make a big difference in facilitating smoother trade and reducing the cost of doing business,” Afolabi said.
