A 47-year-old man, identified as Emi Sigah, has died after he was allegedly subjected to a public flogging by a mob in Ekowe community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has stirred fresh concerns over the persistence of mob justice and the enforcement of traditional punitive measures outside the formal legal system.

Residents of the riverine community alleged that Sigah had been accused of sexually assaulting a minor. According to accounts from locals, the allegation emerged after a young girl, whose identity is being withheld for protection, accompanied her aunt to a nearby farm to harvest okra.

Community sources claimed that the suspect allegedly ambushed the child while her aunt walked ahead.

Sigah was reportedly apprehended at the scene by community members. In what residents described as a long-standing local custom for handling rape allegations, he was subjected to public flogging.

The tradition, according to sources, prescribes up to 120 strokes of the cane, administered collectively by the 12 families in the community, with each family delivering 10 strokes.

However, witnesses said the punishment turned fatal when Sigah collapsed after receiving about 40 strokes.

Some members of the community were said to have called for restraint and proposed alternative sanctions, including monetary fines ranging from N15,000 to N50,000.

Despite these suggestions, certain youths allegedly insisted that the full punishment be enforced as a deterrent to others.

Sigah was later confirmed dead, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting debate over the limits of traditional justice, especially in cases involving grave criminal allegations.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Target Segibo, confirmed that security operatives had restored calm in the area.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ayebaitari Easterday, the council boss disclosed that the community’s youth president and three other individuals had been arrested in connection with the incident.

The suspects are currently being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Bayelsa State Police Command in Yenagoa, where investigations are ongoing.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement on the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault or the mob action, but the incident has renewed calls for adherence to due process and the rule of law in addressing criminal accusations.
