President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked Nigeria’s Independence Day by conferring prestigious national honours on several top government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajuddeen Abbas, and Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

Tinubu also honored Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and Deputy Speaker of the House Benjamin Kalu.

Akpabio and Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun were awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), while Abbas and Barau received the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).

Kalu was conferred with the Commander of the Order of Niger (CON).

These awards come at a critical time, with political analysts highlighting the need for strengthened leadership and governance to address Nigeria’s pressing issues.

Dr. Funmi Adegboye, a political science lecturer, noted, “While national honours recognize individuals’ service, they also symbolize the expectations for these leaders to push for reforms, particularly in the areas of insecurity and economic recovery.”

As Nigeria grapples with economic instability and widespread youth discontent, these honours place even greater responsibility on lawmakers and judiciary leaders to foster progress and national unity.

“The focus should now be on how these institutions can work together to implement meaningful changes,” added Adegboye.
