President Bola Tinubu has dismissed allegations that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, insisting that credible opposition remains essential to the country’s democratic growth and good governance.

Speaking at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on March 27, Tinubu said democracy can only thrive where there is vibrant political competition and freedom of association.

Opposition parties have repeatedly accused the president and the ruling APC of attempting to consolidate power in a manner that could weaken multi-party democracy. However, Tinubu firmly rejected the claim, describing it as a misinterpretation of his administration’s intentions.

“Let us say this clearly and sincerely. We are here for national unity and greatness. We are not going to look back. Critics can say it anyway they want,” the president stated.

He noted that Nigeria has enjoyed 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule and emphasised that his government remains committed to strengthening, not undermining, democratic institutions.

“Let me reiterate, especially to those who often lament and misunderstand us: we do not seek a one-party state,” Tinubu said.

According to him, democratic governance improves when there is a responsible and constructive opposition capable of scrutinising policies and offering alternative ideas.

“Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition. As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition — one that can challenge, question and help refine policies. That is how statecraft improves, and good governance is achieved. That is how nations advance,” he added.

The president further stressed that the constitutional right to freedom of association applies to all political actors, including the APC, and cannot be curtailed.

“We cannot burn the constitutional freedom of our association. As a statesman and a political leader, I believe in credible opposition. One, you can challenge, question and help refine policies. That is how improvements and good governance are achieved. That is how all nations thrive,” he said.

Beyond political issues, Tinubu also highlighted what he described as early gains from his administration’s economic reforms. He said Nigeria is beginning to witness renewed investor confidence despite a challenging global economic climate.

“The government has remained focused on delivering on its mandate to the Nigerian people,” the president said. “Amid the complex global economic and political environment, today, I can assure you we are on the right track.”

Tinubu disclosed that investor sentiment has improved, particularly in the oil and gas sector, which he said has regained attractiveness to foreign investors.

He also pointed to Nigeria’s recent Eurobond issuance, which he said was oversubscribed by 400 percent, as evidence of renewed global confidence in the country’s economic direction.

Additionally, the president noted that Nigeria has exited the international financial grey list, describing it as a significant step toward restoring global financial credibility.

With these assurances, Tinubu maintained that his administration remains committed to democratic principles and economic reforms aimed at stabilising and advancing the nation.
