President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Olusegun “Segun” Awolowo, the grandson of the late nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Segun Awolowo passed away at the age of 62.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the loss as “unfortunate and deeply tragic,” noting that it is a painful blow not only to the Awolowo family but to the entire nation.

The President said the late Awolowo lived a life that reflected the principles and values for which his illustrious family is known.

“Segun exemplified the Awolowo pedigree in appearance, character, and demeanour. Like his grandfather, he was a lawyer devoted to defending truth and justice,” the President stated.

He commended Segun Awolowo’s contributions to national development, particularly his role in strengthening Nigeria’s non-oil export sector.

Awolowo served as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) from 2013 to 2021, becoming the longest-serving head of the agency in its history. Under his leadership, the NEPC advanced several policies aimed at boosting Nigeria’s global trade competitiveness.

President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to Segun Awolowo’s immediate family—his wife, children, and mother, Sisi Abah Folawiyo.

He also commiserated with the government and people of Ogun State, the South-West region, and the entire country.

“May his soul rest in peace,” President Tinubu prayed, while urging those he left behind to find comfort in the impactful life he lived and the enduring legacy he built.
