Many contestants in the All Progressive Congress have indicated interest in the presidential ticket of the party, in the Southwest, the main aspirants for the presidency in the party are said to be Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo.
With the former Governor of Lagos State and the current Vice-president of the country being from the Southwest, it is believed that some key members of the party in the region may pitch their tent in Osinbajo’s camp against Tinubu’s ambitions.
Accordingly, this article will look at some of the top APC members in the Southwest who may support Yemi Osinbajo’s presidential ambition against that of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
- Rauf Aregbesola
Even though Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola started his political journey as a Commissioner in Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet, he seems to have gotten at loggerheads with his former boss and may not support his presidential ambitions.
The bad blood between Aregbesola and Tinubu started when Aregbesola who is the former governor of Osun State kicked against the candidacy of Adegboyega Oyetola, who was believed to be favoured by Tinubu.
With their current political differences, it is posited that Aregbesola may not want the APC presidential ticket to be handed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu and instead may settle for his opponent, Yemi Osinbajo, who incidentally was also appointed alongside him during Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State.
2. Dapo Abiodun
The current governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, may also throw his weight behind Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo as he vies for the presidential ticket of the All Progressive Congress.
Abiodun who is an APC governor in the Southwest hails from the same state as the Vice-president. In fact, Vanguard has recently reported that the governor stated that the state would support Yemi Osinbajo’s presidential ambitions.
3. Adebayo Shittu
Former Minister of Communications who is another top member of the APC in the Southwest may also pitch his tent in Osinbajo’s camp as the party heads for the primaries.
Adebayo Shittu at the last convention of the All Progressive Congress lost the position of the National Secretary of the APC to Senator Iyiola Omisore who is said to be one of Bola Tinubu’s new political allies as he was seen with Tinubu on different consultations visits.
Accordingly, Mr. Shittu may feel that Tinubu was instrumental to Omisore’s emergence as APC National Secretary and may want to pay him back by supporting his opponent at the APC presidential primaries.
