Tottenham secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, dealing another blow to United’s underperforming season and providing some relief for Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

James Maddison scored the only goal of the match in the 13th minute, as Tottenham moved up to 12th place in the Premier League standings, above United.

The win marked Spurs’ third victory over the Red Devils this season, easing the pressure on Postecoglou following exits from both domestic cup competitions and their lowly league position.

United, on the other hand, remain in 15th place, though they still hold a 12-point buffer over the relegation zone.

Despite the win, Tottenham’s victory came amid growing frustration from their supporters, who voiced their discontent with the club’s ownership and chairman, Daniel Levy.

A large banner in the stands read, “24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy – Time for change,” and many fans participated in a protest calling for Levy to step down.

For Postecoglou, the victory came with some positive news before kick-off, as he welcomed back several key players from injury.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made his first appearance since November, and Maddison was also included in the starting lineup. New signings Destiny Udogie, Brennan Johnson, and Wilson Odobert were placed on the bench.

Manchester United also faced injury setbacks, with Amad Diallo joining Lisandro Martinez on the sidelines for the rest of the season and Kobbie Mainoo out for a month.

Manager Ruben Amorim had to name eight teenagers among his nine substitutes, forcing forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee to start up front, after both had been left out of the starting lineup in United’s previous match, a 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace.

United had early chances, with Hojlund’s shot being saved by Vicario and Garnacho being denied by the goalkeeper.

However, it was Spurs who took the lead when United goalkeeper Andre Onana parried a shot from Lucas Bergvall into the path of Maddison, who slotted the ball into an empty net for his 10th goal of the season.

United had a golden opportunity to equalize before halftime, but Garnacho missed an open chance after being set up by Bruno Fernandes.

After the break, Vicario continued to frustrate the United attackers with another crucial save from Garnacho.

Zirkzee also squandered a chance to equalize when he headed wide from a cross by Noussair Mazraoui, with the goal at his mercy.

United’s inability to find the back of the net is becoming a familiar issue, as they have scored fewer goals than all teams except the bottom three and Everton in the Premier League this season.

At the other end, Onana was kept busy, saving a powerful shot from Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski, but United’s attack couldn’t break down Tottenham’s defense, despite a makeshift backline.

The win allows Postecoglou to breathe easier, offering hope that Tottenham’s fortunes are turning around.
