FC Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has attributed his side’s 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg to a mix of defensive errors and misfortune.

Barcelona fell at home on Wednesday night as goals from Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth handed Diego Simeone’s men a crucial advantage heading into the return leg.

Speaking during his post-match press conference at Camp Nou, Flick acknowledged that key moments swung the game in Atletico’s favour.

“On the first goal, we needed to defend much better,” Flick said. “And the red card led to a free-kick goal. We could’ve done better.”

Barcelona were forced to play part of the match with a numerical disadvantage following a red card incident that significantly shifted momentum. Atletico capitalised on the situation, maintaining defensive discipline while exploiting set-piece opportunities.

Despite the setback, Flick praised his players’ effort, insisting that the tie remains open ahead of the second leg.

“We played well in the first and second half, even with a player less,” he noted. “We gave everything, but today luck was not on our side. It’s not over yet.”

Barcelona created several promising chances but failed to convert them, while Atletico displayed their trademark resilience under Simeone, combining defensive organisation with clinical finishing.

The German tactician struck an optimistic tone, urging belief within the squad and among supporters.

“We’ll try, we’ll fight. The semi-final might seem far away now, but we’ll try to be there,” Flick added.

With a two-goal deficit to overturn, Barcelona now face a demanding second-leg encounter as they seek to keep their Champions League hopes alive and secure a place in the semi-finals.
