After years of internal conflicts and stagnation, the Ugborodo Community Management Committee (UCMC) in Delta State has launched a comprehensive development plan, pledging to transform the community’s social, economic, and environmental landscape within a 12-month period.

The ambitious blueprint, formally introduced as the Ugborodo Community Development Plan (UCDP), is themed ‘Rebuilding Ugborodo with Vision, Unity, and Purpose.’

UCMC Secretary Eyengho Besidone, speaking on behalf of the Chairman, stated that the newly installed leadership aims to restore unity, transparency, and accountability to community governance.

“We are committed to delivering sustainable projects, engaging stakeholders constructively, and restoring trust and pride in Ugborodo governance,” Besidone affirmed.

In the initial two months, the UCMC plans to establish a functional community secretariat, develop specialized subcommittees, and launch vital communication platforms, including a dedicated website and broadcast WhatsApp groups.

They also intend to organize quarterly town hall forums to foster greater community engagement.

The committee’s top priorities, outlined in their statement, span critical sectors:

  • Infrastructure Development: This includes advocating for the expansion of the Ode-Ugborodo access road, constructing 10 kilometers of rural roads, and building two modern community jetties to improve connectivity.
  • Educational Advancement: Plans feature the renovation of public schools, provision of learning materials, teacher incentives, and laying the groundwork for a proposed Ugborodo Marine & Environmental Polytechnic to enhance local skills.
  • Healthcare Access: Initiatives involve upgrading existing health posts into primary healthcare centers, deploying mobile clinics for riverine areas, and training 20 community health volunteers.
  • Economic Empowerment: To combat youth unemployment and exclusion, the UCDP introduces a N50 million Women Multipurpose Cooperative scheme supporting 500 female entrepreneurs. Vocational bootcamps in fields like welding, ICT, marine mechanics, fashion, and fish processing will also be launched.
  • Business Opportunities: The committee plans to establish an Ugborodo International Market Hub and reactivate indigenous contractor and artisan registries to facilitate engagement with major companies such as Chevron, SPDC, SEPLAT, NPDC, NPSL, and NGC.

One of the most significant advocacy pillars of the UCMC’s plan is the reactivation of the abandoned Gas Revolution Industrial Park (GRIP).

Originally sited in Ugborodo, GRIP was designed as Nigeria’s premier gas-based industrial hub, and its revival could unlock immense economic potential for the community and the broader region.

The UCMC intends to engage relevant government ministries, NNPCL, NEPZA, OGFZA, and the Delta State Government to bring this stalled project to fruition.
