A yet-to-be-identified suspected vandal has been electrocuted to death while attempting to steal cables from a power distribution substation in Enugu, in a fatal encounter that has prompted the utility company to renew calls for community action against infrastructure destruction.
The lifeless body of the yet-to-be-identified vandal suspect was discovered within the premises of the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation on Independence Avenue, Independence Layout, Enugu, belonging to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited.
According to the Head of Communications at MEDL, Emeka Ezeh, the deceased and his accomplices had reportedly succeeded in loosening two intermediate cables from the substation and were in the process of removing a third when electricity supply was restored — resulting in the electrocution of the deceased. “It is presumed that the deceased did not act alone, as two of the vandalised intermediate cables were missing from the scene, an indication that his accomplices had fled with them,” Ezeh said.
The remains of the electrocuted suspect were evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police and deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital morgue. His identity had not been confirmed at the time of filing this report.
Ezeh described the incident as deeply unfortunate while stressing the wider consequences of such attacks on communities. “It is a battle we must all fight collectively because once these installations are vandalised, customers served by them are severely impacted. It is hoped that the death of this young man, who paid the ultimate price with his life, will serve as a deterrent to others involved in such criminal activities,” he said.
The Enugu incident is part of a persistent national pattern. Electricity infrastructure vandalism costs Nigeria’s power sector billions of naira annually, routinely plunging communities into prolonged blackouts and undermining the country’s already struggling grid. Distribution companies have repeatedly warned that stolen cables and vandalised transformers not only disrupt supply but also endanger the lives of both the vandals themselves and unsuspecting members of the public.
MEDL urged residents to report suspicious activity around electricity installations to the company or security agencies, warning that any individual found tampering with power infrastructure faces both the risk of death and criminal prosecution.
