Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has conceded that his team faces a daunting task in their upcoming Champions League clash against Real Madrid, with only a “one per cent” chance of progressing after their 3-2 defeat in the first leg at home last week.

Despite leading 2-1 with just four minutes remaining, City were undone by late goals, leaving them with a difficult uphill battle for the second leg at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

“The margin to win at the Bernabeu from that position, everybody knows, the percentage to go through, we arrive at one per cent. Or I don’t know what, but it will be minimal,” Guardiola said. “But as much as you have a chance, we will try, that’s for sure.

We are going like we always have done, but, this season, the reality is we have been miles away.

We have been really, really poor in performances and results this season.”

City heads to Spain on the back of a 4-0 victory over Newcastle in the Premier League, a result that keeps them on track for a potential return to next season’s Champions League, even if this year’s campaign ends on Wednesday.

“For one game, Saturday, we played really good but it’s not going to change the opinion, the reality,” Guardiola admitted. “But, of course, it’s better to travel to Madrid with this result.”

As the team prepares for their final chance in Europe, the manager remains hopeful that City can still produce a miracle in Madrid.
