Burna Boy and Davido have not enjoyed the best of relationship for some time now. But it did not start all gloomy for the two artistes.
Before 2019, Davido and Burna Boy have both celebrated each other’s successes. The latter was once at a gig set up by the former.
The beef allegedly began in the autumn of 2019, following Burna Boy’s nomination for a Grammy award for Best World Music Album for ‘African Giant’. Davido congratulated him for the nomination. “Congrats @burnaboy … 🏆… you deserve more then a NOM,” he wrote.
Burna Boy lost the award to Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo, only for a critic to go on Twitter to say Davido paved the way for Burna and others. This didn’t go down well with Burna.
Three months later, Davido announced the release of his new album at the start of May, A Better Time, which was set to arrive in July 2020. Burna Boy soon posted a cryptic message, “JULY will be very funny, and I shall laugh accordingly” on social media, suggesting that he will be ridiculing Davido’s new album.
Davido followed up Burna Boy’s reaction by posting a picture of himself and WizKid with the caption, “The 2 greatest of all time! No cap”
Unable to stay silent, Burna Boy claimed Davido’s success was due to the fact that he had a rich father backing him. Without mentioning Davido, he said, “You cannot play football, everybody knows you cannot play football and you are an embarrassment to the team. But your daddy bought the football team.”
Amid the animosity, the duo were involved in a brawl on November 28, 2019, at a nightclub in Accra, Ghana. WizKid was also at the same location on that day. The altercation resulted in Burna and his entourage being escorted out of the nightclub for the sake of peace.
Some social media enthusiasts have even linked Burna Boy’s “Way Too Big” and Davido’s “Fem” to the beef between them.
With the air of animosity around these two exceptional artistes, it is no surprise that Burna Boy did not react in any way to the viral N1 million challenge which Davido started.
