Why yoruba group refused to endorse Tinubu’s presidential ambition days after Afenifere backed Igbos

Ahead of the 2023 General Election, the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) has said it has no connection with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

It’s no longer a news that Tinubu declared his intention to contest for President Three Weeks ago, the prominent Yoruba Group led by Chief Gani Adams has denied endorsing Tinubu’s Presidential Ambition. In a Statement issued by the OPC Publicity Secretary, Yinka Oguntimehin, the Organization was not involved in a Mega Accord Group of 57 Civil Society Groups rooting for South-West Presidency.

This is coming few days after another South-West Group, Afenifere led by an Elder Statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo openly declared that it ‘ll not support Tinubu’s Presidential Ambition because it is the turn of the South-East to produce Nigeria’s Next President putting into consideration fairness, equity and justice. 

Adebanjo also stated that the South-West has produced Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Incumbent Vice-president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo while the South-East is yet to occupy any of the Two Positions since 1999.

As a Yoruba Man, It Is expected that the OPC should support Tinubu’s Presidential Ambition, But According to it’s Spokesman, Oguntimehin the Gani Adams-led Group will not endorse or mobilize for any politician contesting for Presidency regardless of his tribe. Oguntimehin insisted that Nigeria’s problem can only be solved through restructuring. He added that each Region should be allowed to develop at it’s own pace.
