Works Commissioner declares zero tolerance of portholes on roads in Warri South, Delta State.

The Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads) in Delta State, Reuben Izeze, at a brief ceremony held at former Shell Main Gate in Warri, flagged off the Warri South Local Government Council’s “Operation Zero Tolerance for Portholes and Road Markings,” an initiative of the Council Chairman, Hon. Weyinmi Agbateyiniro.

Izeze called on the people to continue to support the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori administration by remaining peaceful and living together amongst the various ethnic groups in the metropolis.

He commended the Warri South Council chairman for his efforts at rebranding the City and urged him not rest on his oars.

Izeze said: “I am in a ceremony and there are no security men protecting anybody. I recall that once upon a time in Warri, for you to move from one end to another, you have to look to check that you are not tagged by one side or the other side of the conflict.

“For this reason, I must commend our very young and dynamic Chairman for being able to make all of you sit within the same canopy peacefully.

“That therefore, implies that the young man that you have elected to be your Chairman, is one who has a vision and hearing him talk about a road from Omadino to Obodo is very commendable.

“As I was coming in today, I took the bridge and I noticed that all the tall grasses that looked like elephant grasses have been cut and cleaned, and I said that now Warri-South Local Government has a Chairman who understands the aesthetics of the environment. So Mr. Chairman sir, I commend you for what you have started and it is my hope that you will sustain it.

“A lot of people will be wondering why we are remarking roads, the fact is that appropriate road markings reduce accidents and if accidents are reduced you have taken care of the welfare of the people which is essentially the essence of government.

“I have heard some of the things you are doing and I want to say here that the Governor was not wrong in listening to your leaders who selected you as their preferred candidate to be presented to the electorate for the election.

“Within the last 65 days of your administration, I can affirm that you have brought youthfulness and dynamism in the administration of Warri South Local Government Council.

“One other thing I noticed in the course of your speech is that Warri South has always been blessed with men with eloquent capacity and from what we have seen within the last 65 days from the testimonies, visuals, and news items; it is clear that you have backed your eloquence with action.

“As you go about marking roads, fixing potholes, I want to appeal to you, you see, with the inconsistent promises of the APC-led federal government, the hunger in the land has quadrupled; so as you fix roads, please remember that there are potholes in the stomach of even your own aides, the leaders and the people.”

At Omadino, the Commissioner lauded Agbateyiniro for embarking on the road construction which would ameliorate the sufferings of the people of Omadino and Obodo communities.

“A council Chairman constructing a road is highly commendable and I want to commend you, encourage and urge you to continue as you have started. Do not slow down the pace because there is still much to be done.”

Earlier in his remarks, Chairman Warri South Local Government Council, Hon. Weyinmi Agbateyiniro said the ceremony was of major significance because of the importance his administration attaches to the rebranding of Warri.

He paid tributes to leaders of the Council who encouraged him to embark on the projects which he promised the people during his electioneering campaign.

He said: “Today’s event is very epochal because of the quality of leaders that left all their busy schedules to come and add value to this project.

“This project is my administration’s clear determination to see that all portholes on roads in Warri South are not only patched but properly marked with appropriate signs.

“We are, also flagging off the construction of the Obodo-Omadino Road because it is part of my promise to the people during the campaigns.

“We want to rebrand Warri and I can tell you that it is already taking shape because we want Warri to take the shape of a metropolitan city that it deserves.”

Representatives of the impacted communities of Omadino and Obodo, Mr. Andrew Ukavwe and Godwin Tsola thanked the Chairman for the reconstruction of the road.

They lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his support to Councils in the state and for the choice of Hon. Agbateyiniro, describing him as a man for the season.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Val Arenyeka; Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Hon. Matthew Opuoru; Warri South Vice Chairman, Kingsley Edafiadjebre; former State Director of Protocols, Hon. Toritseju Abigor; Chief Vincent Ukudolor and Omimi Esquire were among guests at the ceremony.
