The Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) has issued a stern reminder to motorists on the importance of properly maintaining vehicle number plates, describing them as a vital form of identification on the roads.
The warning came during a joint engagement with the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), led by its General Manager/CEO, Afolabi Solebo.
LSNPPA’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Olayanju Cole, emphasized that number plates are more than just a registration tool—they serve as a motorist’s official identity and must remain legible and compliant with state regulations.
The meeting addressed rising concerns over faded, damaged, or defective plates across Lagos. Motorists were urged to replace old or worn-out plates with newly issued, standardized plates approved by the state government to avoid penalties and ensure smooth identification on the road.

Cole specifically cautioned against using harmful cleaning agents, warning that aromatic solvents, alcohol-based spirits, acetone, petrol, brake oil, kerosene, and abrasive materials could irreversibly damage plates, rendering them unreadable and non-compliant.
In response, LASCOPA reiterated its commitment to protecting motorists’ rights and enhancing service delivery, ensuring that all vehicle registration and identification processes across Lagos meet approved standards.
The authorities urged motorists to treat their number plates as a personal and legal identity, reinforcing that “your number plate is your identity” on the road.
