Lovers’ blood oath takings booms in Delta schools

MUCH more than foodstuffs, bizarre activities of blood oath among young boys and girls in mixed secondary schools in Delta state is said to be increasing astronomically in recent times fuelling concern that if not checked might cause serious health crisis in the state.
Investigation revealed that Senior Secondary Schools 2 and 3 male and female who are clandestinely engaged in amorous love affairs take blood oath as an expression of love and unfathomed relationship with a view to preventing intruders unknown to them about its implication.

National Daily reliably gathered that a popular mixed secondary school in Asaba, (name withheld) along Nnebisi Road before the Inter Bau Round-about, is beehive of illicit sexual activities. It was further gathered that things get messier as male and female students of the school allegedly engage in sexual competition and in the process of getting into oath takings.

Further investigations revealed that their initiation rites include buying a new razor, 26 cowries and cutting of their both nails. After which, it is soaked into water for both love birds to drink after several incantations before sucking the blood stain on their hands.
Our reporter gathered that in Kwale, Agbor, Warri and Ughelli towns, virtually all the mixedsecondary school are allegedly enveloped in lovers’ oath takings and illicit sexual act.

As the illicit act booms in the state and spreading its infectious tentacles to other schools, check revealed that girls and boys who have shunned the practice are often disparaged and jeered at by the love birds. “Those who disregard the practise often subjected to scorn and humiliations by the click of these lovers’ blood oath takers while in classroom,” our reporter was told by one of the students.

However, one of the group members, Roseline Oden said: “We agree we would marry after our university education, but to sustain our love relationship, we took blood oath to keep us intact.”

The State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie who spoke to our correspondent, confirmed that there have been several reports from some schools in Agbor, Ughelli and Asaba where the students have indulged in lovers’ blood oath takings, saying that a committee has been set up to monitor the schools and bring the culprits to book.

He said: “It is wicked, evil act for blood oath takings and the state government is particularly serious about the students involved and would bring them to book”.

Mr. Alkali Baba Usman, Delta State Commissioner of Police while confirming receiving information about the act told our correspondent that, “We have received several reports of lovers’ blood oath takings among secondary schools’ boys and girls, we have deployed our team of investigators to detect and arrest those involved claiming that no arrest has been made.”

From the biblical perspective, Pastor Paul Osegie of the End Time Miracle Ministry in Asaba said the act portends “bad omen for the young male and female who indulged in the act, adding that those involved may run mad if urgent steps are not taken to stop the act.
He said: “It is bad, God forbids such act and the results is madness in no distant time”.

A Medical Doctor with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba Dr. Monday Osarenkhoe said the implications of blood oath takings, apart from being “evil” may lead sicknesses, like contracting HIV from one infected partner to the other coupled with other diseases. He urgently called on the security agents to arrest those involved in blood oath takings reiterating that it was a taboo and out-dated forms of showcasing love for one another,” he added.
